Kybella: A Non-Surgical Treatment for the Double Chin

Have you ever seen a picture of yourself that popped up on social media that you thought was unflattering? Bad lighting and photography angles can be enough to make you feel like you want to hide from the camera. Double chins are a common complaint from people of all ages and body types. Fat under the chin can stubbornly stick around even after losing weight. If you are feeling self-conscious about your double chin, Kybella could be the right solution. At Exclusively Radiant MedSpa,  we offer this non-surgical fat reduction treatment.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is an injection that is FDA approved to help eliminate the double chin, also known as submental fat. It works by destroying the fat cells under your chin using deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a bile acid that can be found in your digestive tract. It helps to break down any fat that you consume to allow you to digest it. As an injection, deoxycholic acid can permanently break down the stubborn fat cells under your chin for a more sculpted jawline.

What Causes the Double Chin?

Submental fat is often challenging to target because it can’t always be resolved by diet and exercise. Even young and thin individuals can have a double chin as a result of genetics or even poor posture. Maybe you have already tried everything including neck and face exercises, losing weight, and maybe even a few products that you saw during an infomercial.

If you have run out of ways to try to reduce your double chin but you want an alternative to surgical procedures such as liposuction, you can consider Kybella. Kybella is the first FDA-approved non-surgical product for submental fat treatment.

What to Expect with Kybella Treatments

After you have a consultation with us to come up with a plan that fits your situation, it will be time for the treatment itself. Kybella treatments are a fast, in-and-out appointment. We start by getting you comfortable, numbing the area, and applying an Allergan grid which will mark where the injections will be. Then the correct Kybella dosage will be injected into the submental area. During the process, the injection itself won’t hurt, but you may feel burning from the solution which usually lasts around 10 minutes.

After the injection, you can expect some soreness, swelling, bruising, and redness in the area. You may also experience some hardness where the solution was injected and numbness for a few weeks after the treatment. This is all a normal reaction to the fat cells breaking down in the area. Many people notice that the swelling decreases with each subsequent treatment as there are fewer fat cells to destroy.

Rare, but more serious side effects can include nerve injury, weakness, numbness, and open sores. If you have had Kybella treatments, make sure to reach out to us right away if any of these symptoms appear.

How to Achieve Optimal Results with Kybella

While some people see the results that they want after one or two treatments, you can expect to need 3-6 for optimal results. Our appointments are typically scheduled at least one month apart to give your body time to adjust to the most recent treatment and to see if there is a need for further injections.

You can also get the best results by working with us to find the perfect dosage for each treatment. You will likely need 2-3 vials of Kybella each time you come in for a treatment. This can depend on whether it’s the first treatment or the last, and how big of an area you want to have treated.

What Areas Can Be Targeted With Kybella?

Many people struggle with stubborn fat that lingers along the jawline, in the jowls, and under the chin. Kybella has only been standardized for use directly under the chin, but there can be other off-label uses for Kybella as well. Use in other parts of the face can come with an increased risk of numbness or weakness, so having a consultation is important to help you assess the risks and potential benefits of off-label use.

Who Can Receive Kybella Treatments?

The patients that are the best candidates for a Kybella treatment are those who are healthy, over 18, and have fat under the chin that they want to address. Good candidates also have reasonable expectations about the results and are committed to having more than one treatment. It could also be a good option for you if you want to avoid getting surgery for your submental fat.

Benefits of Kybella

The Results Are Permanent

When you lose weight, the fat cells in your body decrease in size, but they don’t go away. However, with Kybella treatments, the fat cells are destroyed and will never be able to grow back. This means that the fat cells that are broken down will be gone permanently after Kybella injections even if you gain weight.

Kybella Is Non-Surgical

Surgical procedures to get rid of a double chin can come with mild scarring from the incision site, and they can come with more downtime. With Kybella, the only limitation is how long you want to lay low while you wait for the swelling to reduce. If you feel comfortable wearing a scarf or a turtle neck sweater and getting on with your routine, you’ll likely feel good enough right away to be able to do this.

Kybella Is FDA Approved

Since Kybella is FDA approved for submental fat removal, it has undergone extensive clinical trials. This means that you have a lot of information at your disposal when you decide to research whether this is a good option for you.
