Everything You Need to Know About Botox

Fine lines and wrinkles are a natural part of aging. However, if you prefer your skin to be smoother and line-free, Botox is a quick and effective solution.

Botox is the most popular minimally invasive cosmetic procedure in the United States, so the chances are high that your friend with a line-free forehead has restored their skin’s youthfulness with Botox.

At Exclusively Radiant MedSpa in Pearland, TX, we know you may have many questions about cosmetic injectables. However, we understand that the best decision you can make is an informed one when it comes to your face.

Learn all about Botox here, and if you decide to restore your skin’s youthfulness through Botox or another treatment, know that Exclusively Radiant MedSpa offers the best treatments for you to look and feel your best.

What Is Botox?

Botox is also known as botulinum toxin therapy or a neurotoxin injectable. This injectable wrinkle treatment contains the naturally occurring compound botulinum toxin A, which is found in the environmental bacteria Clostridium botulinum.

Botox was the first FDA-approved injectable to minimize the appearance of frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet in adults. It’s been on the market as a wrinkle treatment for 20 years.

Aging and Wrinkles

While it’s common knowledge that aging and wrinkles go hand in hand, understanding the cause of wrinkles can help explain how Botox works. With age, many factors contribute to the formation of wrinkles. These include:

  • Drier, more fragile skin
  • Loss of collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs)
  • Diminishing fat in deeper layers of skin
  • Exposure to UV light
  • Smoking
  • Repeated facial expressions

While you can control exposure to UV light with hats and sunscreen and can avoid smoking, the other factors that contribute to wrinkles are harder to manage. For example, after the age of 20, your body produces one percent less collagen each year.

Loss of collagen makes the skin thinner and more fragile. In addition, the sweat and oil glands also experience diminished functioning. The body produces less elastin, which makes the skin flexible and elastic, and GAGs, which keep the skin hydrated.

In combination with other factors such as sun exposure and facial expressions, this decline starts the wrinkle formation process through dynamic lines.

Dynamic lines appear when you make facial expressions. Over time, as your skin becomes more fragile and your dynamic lines occur repeatedly, those lines become static, meaning they no longer disappear when your facial expression does.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox serves several purposes, but as a wrinkle treatment, it works to help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by paralyzing the muscles underneath the lines. Botox injections cause the underlying muscles to stop moving at the targeted sites, causing the wrinkles to stop forming and smoothing the skin.

However, Botox is more than a wrinkle treatment for current lines. It also works as a preventative treatment. As your Botox injection stops the muscles from moving, it prevents dynamic wrinkles from forming.

Botox’s ability to prevent dynamic wrinkles from forming makes it increasingly popular among younger adults. Known as preventative Botox or “baby Botox,” many adults in their 20s and 30s are now receiving cosmetic injectables in tiny amounts to prevent wrinkles from forming.

What Are the Benefits of Botox?

Botox both treats and prevents dynamic lines and wrinkles. However, these cosmetic injectables also treat several medical conditions, such as:

  • Cervical dystonia (neck spasms)
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
  • Bladder dysfunctions
  • Lazy eye due to muscle imbalances
  • Eye twitching
  • Chronic migraines
  • Muscle contractures from neurological conditions.

Cosmetically, Botox treatments chiefly target moderate to severe forehead lines, crow’s feet lines, and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults. Botox injections also soften a square jawline, smooth dimpling in the chin, and correct an overly gummy smile.

Botox Treatments

Before any Botox treatment, you’ll meet with a member of our expert team to discuss your skin concerns and your overall goals. While Botox treatments vary in length depending on size and number of targeted areas, most procedures only take 10–15 minutes.

The Procedure

Botox injections use a tiny needle, so most patients don’t require numbing cream or topical anesthesia. Our skilled injector will identify precise areas on your face to place your injections for the best results.

The Recovery

There is no necessary downtime after a Botox treatment. You can resume normal activities immediately. However, we recommend waiting four hours after your injections before engaging in strenuous exercise or rubbing your face at the treatment site.

What Results Should I Expect from Cosmetic Botox?

It’s worth noting that you will not see results from Botox injections immediately. Botox injections take time to act. How long it takes to see improvements in your wrinkles may depend on the following factors:

  • Age
  • Muscle mass
  • Gender
  • The volume of your injection
  • Skin elasticity

Most patients see some results after about two to three days. These will continue to improve until about two weeks after your treatment, when you’ll see the full effects. Your results will last for around three months.

Why Does It Take Time for Botox to Work?

Your Botox treatment needs to reach the cellular level of the muscle to block the neurotransmitter in the nerve. Botox stills the muscle by halting the neurotransmitters that affect the wrinkles or potential wrinkles in the targeted area.

Some patients find that encouraging movement in the face after their Botox treatments allows Botox to absorb more rapidly, shortening the amount of time it takes to see results.

Am I a Candidate for Botox?

The best candidates for Botox are those in good physical and psychological health. There isn’t a definitive age for the best time to start Botox, but earlier than your mid-20s is probably too early, even for preventative Botox.

If you’re wondering if Botox is right for you, schedule an appointment with the expert team at Exclusively Radiant MedSpa in Pearland, TX. Our safe and effective treatments can restore your skin’s more youthful appearance today.
