Cosmetic Injectables to Combat the Effects of Aging

Aging can take a toll on your skin, leading to fine lines and wrinkles that are difficult to prevent. Fortunately, cosmetic injectables such as Botox and Dysport can help to combat the effects of aging on the face in minimally-invasive ways.

How Do Cosmetic Injectables Work?

Before learning how cosmetic injectables work, it can be helpful to understand how wrinkles develop on the skin. Wrinkles naturally arise as the skin loses its elasticity with age. Wrinkles and fine lines are more prominent in places affected by your facial expressions.

Repeated facial movement causes dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles often occur in areas such as:

  • Between the eyebrows (known as frown lines or glabellar lines)
  • Around the eyes (known as crow’s feet)
  • From the corner of the nose to the mouth
  • Across the forehead

To treat these dynamic wrinkles, you need to address the muscles that lay beneath the skin rather than just addressing the skin on its own. With this in mind, injectables like Dysport and Botox are designed to target these muscles using neurotoxins such as botulinum toxin A.

During a treatment, our aesthetic medical team can inject the chosen neurotoxin into the muscles in the affected areas, allowing the muscle to relax. As muscle activity lessens, the skin will often lie smoother over the top of the muscle. This can help to reduce creases, fine lines, and wrinkles.

Botox and Dysport can also be used as a preventative measure for those who want to avoid fine lines from developing in the first place.

Who Can Benefit from Cosmetic Injectables?

Injectable  neurotoxins are a great option for patients who want to enjoy smoother skin. Relaxed muscles give you a more youthful appearance.

Botox or Dysport injections are ideal for those who have moderate to severe wrinkles. While the effects are temporary, many people experience results for as long as four months.

There are two primary reasons people seek out cosmetic injectables. Some receive treatment after fine lines have already developed on the face.

However, these injectables can also be a great preventive measure against the development of fine lines.

What is the Difference Between Botox and Dysport?

Botox and Dysport are two of the most common injectables on the market today. Both require a prescription from a medical provider, like the aesthetic medical team at Exclusively Radiant MedSpa.

Both Botox and Dysport are derived from a form of botulinum toxin type A that can be injected into the muscles of the face where wrinkles develop over time, including the forehead, around the eyes, and near the nose.

The main difference between Botox and Dysport is in the formula. Because they are made by different manufacturers, they will have distinct formulas.

Despite this difference, they work in much the same way. Each of these neurotoxins can be injected directly into the muscles that are responsible for dynamic wrinkles. Once in place, they prevent the muscle from fully contracting. This allows the skin to fit more smoothly over the surface of the face, ultimately reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Along with the difference in formula, the onset of these medications will vary. Dysport tends to show results faster, with an onset of five to seven days after treatment. Botox takes a bit longer to show results, with an onset ranging from 7 to 14 days to see full effects.

You should also be aware of how long each of these injectables will last. Many patients report that the effects of Dysport last for roughly five months after their initial treatment. Botox patients report that the effects typically last around four months for their moderate to severe lines.

What is Jeuveau?

Jeuveau is another leading injectable that can be used to address fine lines. It is also derived from botulinum toxin A, but it contains a purified form of the ingredient. Though it has a distinct formulation, it still works in much the same way, targeting the underlying muscle and preventing excess contractions.

Jeuveau, like Botox and Dysport, may be used to treat many conditions, including:

  • TMJ
  • Gummy smile
  • Non-surgical brow lift
  • Lip flip
  • Hyperhidrosis

In particular, Jeuveau is designed to treat frown lines between the eyebrows, which are also known as glabellar lines. It is an effective form of treatment for moderate to severe wrinkles in adults.

This cosmetic injectable blocks the nerves from causing the facial muscles to flex, smoothing out fine lines.

If you want to see results quickly, Jeuveau may be the best fit for you. The onset of this injection often occurs within about three to five days.

The results of this treatment are quite long-lasting, as well. The average time to see the full impact from Jeuveau injections is around 30 days. However, the results can last for up to five months at a time.

Does an Injectable Treatment Take Long?

There is no downtime required after your procedure. Patients can resume normal activities right away, making it easy to schedule your first appointment while you’re on a lunch break or on your way home from work.
